Communities and the significance of being social in the urban setting.

Cities are constructed on the basis of the common surroundings, recurrent interactions as well as shared accountability as opposed to intimate personal familiarity. As a city dweller, a person has to coexist with thousands of other people who might have different backgrounds, ways of life, languages, and priorities, but share the same infrastructure and recreational areas. In the perception of the urban communities, one should understand that social harmony in urban areas is not so much about how individuals relate with one another, but rather about social awareness, respect to each other and accountable actions. Consciousness assists them to live in the city without getting into conflicts and isolation unnecessarily.

The concept of shared responsibility is characteristic of the urban community due to the nature of activities related to cities which are shared. Streets, sidewalks, residential buildings, public transport, and recreational places can work only in the situations when people think about the impact of their deeds on other people. Avoiding collective responsibility may result in awkwardness, claustrophobia and stress. The social awareness makes people think wisely and understand that little actions can help to create the quality of the city life.

Urban communication styles are largely influenced by time and diversity. Communications can be short term, indirect, and situational as opposed to personal or long term. Unconsciously, these patterns may be mistaken in indifference or rudeness. Knowledge of the norms of urban communication makes people understand how to interpret the communication correctly and react in a correct way. Consciousness minimizes misunderstanding and interpersonal tension.

In high populations, community rules are critical towards the preservation of order and comfort. These standards do not necessarily have to be fixed, but they are usually known and are not spoken directly like being mindful of the levels of noise, cleanliness, and sharing of space. Consciousness of these norms assists to adjust people into the living conditions of urban areas. Norms assist in coexistence that does not have to be fined.

The involvement makes the urban communities strong through establishment of a bond beyond the normal interactions. Participation can be either neighborhood based, local efforts, or informal collaboration of the residents. The awareness will promote involvement without threats and intimidations. The involvement enhances confidence and community identification.

Urban communities are rich in diversity which is also one of its greatest values as it unites different views, cultures and experiences. Diversity is, however, also in need of tolerance, compassion, and openness. Social awareness makes people recognize differences instead of regarding them as a challenge. The inclusion makes cities creative and resilient.

Even informal support networks enhance both emotional and practical resiliency in urban areas. Short interactions with neighbors, colleagues, or other community members may give a feeling of support and reassurance during times of need. The awareness fosters the establishment and sustenance of such connections in a deliberate manner. Stability is increased by community support.

Finally, the social consciousness of the cities turns them into a community instead of a large crowd. The awareness of shared responsibility, communication standards and diversity enable individuals to live in harmony. Being conscious would bring about a sense of belonging, less conflict, and better urban life.
